Question:
Can a registered medical practitioner in an accident and emergency department make a recommendation for involuntary admission or is this confined to general practitioners only.

Answer:

Yes. A registered medical practitioner means a person whose name is entered in the General Register of Medical Practitioners. Therefore, a registered medical practitioner who has received an application can make a recommendation provided that he/she is not disqualified.  A RMP is disqualified if he/she; a) has an interest in any payments to be made in respect of the care of the person in the Approved Centre concerned, b) is a member of staff of the approved centre concerned, c) is a spouse or a relative of the person the subject of the application, or d) is the applicant.
